Our Husband Has Gone Mad Again

This weekend was one i decided to become….cultured. I decided to go watch a couple of plays by Festival of Creative Arts playing in the city centre, one at the Kenya National Theatre and the other at Alliance Francais. I did manage to catch Ola Rotimi’s Our Husband Has Gone Mad Again.
I shall not bother to offer a thorough review since i was more than impressed by the cast’s performance even with the niggling has accent, does not have accent, states that the actors went through, to a point where i gave up trying to understand what was being said, Iddi Achieng was disappointing in this instance because i think she took the accent to unfathomable heights and in her enthusiasm, communication sadly took a back seat.
I took a thousand shots and it was difficult to choose the few that i would use to take you through the play since i shall not be bothered to tell you the entire story. The short of it is that it is the story of Okwonko, his three wives and his quest for power, at least politically, with the new wife arriving unexpectedly, it was all up in the air.
Tables are turned as Sikira, his newest wife and her mother plot a bloodless coup and take over the State of Naija since Okwonko did not have the mettle nor charisma for leadership, that would happen when you try and employ military tactics in the strategy for winning a campaign, not a wise idea at all as evidenced in the play.
Do have a lovely week!

Nice post! Reminds me of drama fest, but with much better props (I love the set with the green couch). Since these were not Naijas acting, and especially if they were trying to imitate the Naija accent and pidgin English, I can understand the frustration of trying to understand what they were saying.

Went for the other one at “Alliance Francais” titled “Nuts”…my only qualm with that is that they billed it as being a hilarious comedy n it seemed more like a courtroom drama!! been there for their previous ones n this one was a disappointment..but the missus loved it so i guess all’s well that ends well.

I watched ‘Nuts’ at AF…Boo and I liked it, lakini I have biff with the fact that it was meant to start at 8 and at 9 we were still, uh, freezing our nuts and bolts off.Urghhh…They really need t work on that time thing.
July 8th, 2008 at 5:07 pm
Ooooooh, theatre. I’ve dragged Booboo there more often than he’d like. And also, I like the furniture of this one. Are still on about accents? Has anyone actually called Bizzle?

I watched both “nuts’ and ‘Our husband…” Festival of creative arts does a pretty good job. What do u mean? iddi achieng’ was fantastic!her accent was consistent and she took the effort to learn some pidgin english, loved her to bits and ofcourse jackline nyaminde too. were it not for them, i would not have appreciated the performance as much. There was something ‘off’ about the rest of the cast and performance even Derek Amunga didnt shine as much as he always does.
Nuts on the other hand had a powerful cast. Brilliant actors and actresses. Though the “prosecutor” was being overshadowed by the “nut” kiasi with her sideshows. Kinda distracting. the play was well scripted ,casting and the performance, wow!..The ‘pilot’ looked hot.
ps. @31337 i was wondering who was that thinking they were at the zoo with those many shots they were taking. Kumbe ni wewe!!

Well… still chasing the rear end of the evolution being, I see…
I have been a big fan of local theatre but recently I have not been very disciplined in attending..seems like I missed a good one though I could be wrong… Festival has some of the best actors I’ve seen, particularly Derrick Amunga, but their plot revolves around the same things…(and most of them are suspended in the human midsection) and after a while, it does get boring. One of the reasons I go, or used to go,to the theater was because it was a source of unparalleled acerbic wit. Unfortunately, I think it may have dumbed down for the audience(as Mr.Carter would put it)
I still think theatre has potential to be a lot greater than it is. I am trying my hand at writing a play…we’ll see how it goes.
Good to see the Intelligensia try out being the Artsia…

Nice pics…! I like the ghost one.

I hated the show. The accents were off and I think they overacted.
July 25th, 2008 at 8:19 pm
had to come back again. are you in for the next one this weekend? (aug 2?)
August 9th, 2008 at 8:06 pm
I dont know what has happened to me of late because I haven’t been to a play for close to a year. Any weekend that am not working, am always out of town. I have lost my groove with this. My favorite actress of all times happens to be one Jackie Nyaminde. She is hot too!
